Our software and system documentation starts with writers, who investigate the documentation requirements and build templates to be approved by the customer. We document as much as we can by attending requirements meetings, design sessions, and review sessions, before the documents ever reach the hands of the technical team. Once the writers have completed as much as possible, we turn it over to the technical team for missing information and review. This method allows the engineers to design and engineer while writers do what we do best.By embedding ourselves in the engineering teams, we can not only produce documentation, but also have a thorough understanding of the entire project. This allows us to use our other skills as instructional designers and change managers to bring a complete package to engineering projects. We can interview users and perform a requirements analysis, and we can design complete instruction packages to train end users or other trainers on the system.
