Pulp Mills

Establishments in this category are primarly engaged in manufacturing pulp without manufacturing paper or paperboard. The pulp is made by separating the cellulose fibers from the other impurities in wood or other materials, such as used or recycled rags, linters, scrap paper, and straw.

Compost Manufacturing

This includes establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing compost through the controlled aerobic, biological decomposition and curing of biodegradable materials.

Custom Compounding of Purchased Resins

This includes establishments primarily engaged in (1) custom mixing and blending plastics resins made elsewhere or (2) reformulating plastics resins from recycled plastics products.

Recyclable Material Merchant Wholesalers

Establishments in this category are primarly engaged in the merchant wholesale distribution of automotive scrap, industrial scrap, and other recyclable materials. Included in this industry are auto wreckers primarily engaged in dismantling motor vehicles for the purpose of wholesaling scrap.

Materials Recovery Facilities

Establishments in this category are primarly engaged in (1) operating facilities for separating and sorting recyclable materials from nonhazardous waste streams (i.e., garbage) and/or (2) operating facilities where commingled recyclable materials, such as paper, plastics, used beverage cans, and metals, are sorted into distinct categories.
